Continuing Education for Teachers Aides
The “No Child Left Behind” Act of 2001 requires teachers aides to know a certain amount of information, beyond that found in a High School Diploma. The act states teacher’s assistants must be “highly qualified” but it does not specify exactly what that means, and leaves it up to the states to determine what the qualifications are. Most states require teachers aides to continue education up to an Associate’s Degree, provided there is focus placed on an educational background.

Professional Organizations for Teacher’s Assistants
There are few professional organizations designed just for teachers aides. Most of the nationally recognized professional organizations are built for full fledged teachers, but may allow for teacher’s assistants. There are also many professional organizations based on the subject matter one teaches, and for those involved with special education.
The National Education Association or NEA, is a nationally recognized organization for teachers, teachers aides, and college students who are enrolled in an education program. It not only helps teachers and their assistants band together on professional issues of pay, benefits, and more, but will also provide ideas to enhance classrooms, educational experience, and student bonds.
For teachers aides in North Carolina, there is a professional organization to consider joining, called the North Carolina Association of Teachers Assistants, or NCATA. This is designed to help all teachers aides in North Carolina come together for the purpose of bettering each other and their classrooms.
