Teachers Aide Training Certificate Levels Explained
In many parts of the United States, teachers aide training can involve three levels of certificates. This type of training is generally used by teachers aides who begin as substitutes and have no formal training or certification. For those who want to be aides in these states, like New York or Arizona, this education and certification is essential. If you are considering becoming an assistant, you may want to consider the following information.
Teachers Aide Training Certification Level One
The first level of certification in teachers aide training provides the aide with information he or she immediately needs to enter the field of teacher assisting. This certification level is required for anyone wanting to work in the classroom and instruct children under the supervision of a licensed teacher. Before you become an assistant, though, you must:
- Have at least a high school diploma or GED
- Pass any tests required by your state to test the skills you have learned during your teachers aide training
- Take any additional teachers aide training required by your particular state. This may include school violence intervention and prevention, child abuse identification and prevention, or any other type of specialized training
- You must be able to pass a drug test and a state and federal background test
- Many states will not allow you to study for level one certification before working as a substitute teachers aide for a least a continuous year
This certification is generally only valid for about one three years, and renewal for additional one to three years is only available once. For this reason, advancement to a level two certification is needed.
Teachers Aide Training Certification Level Two
The second certification provides you with, after teachers aide training, more information and education you need to successfully assist in the instruction of elementary, middle school, and high school classrooms. Before obtaining this level of certification, you must generally have received and assisted under a level one certification for at least one year.
This type of certification remains valid for two to three years and can not be renewed. Advancement to your third level of certification is needed to continue working as a teaching assistant.
Teachers Aide Training Certification Level Three
The next certification you may obtain will give you an education background to help you provide a better level of instruction in the classroom. While you will still be required to work under supervision upon completing this certification, you knowledge and experience will allow you to help your students achieve excellence.
Before beginning your teachers aide training for a level three certificate, you must have completed both the level one certification and level two certificate. You must also generally work for at least a year under both certificates.
This type of certification is continually valid if renewed every five years. A certain number of college credits or hours spend in professional development classes are usually needed to renew this type of certification. Activate employment as a teachers aide during a five year period is also required for renewal.
Before enrolling in teachers aide training, check with your state teaching association to see what type of education is needed to become employed at schools in your area.
