Teacher Aide Work
By Melanie Ullman
Teacher aide work isn’t what you remember from your elementary or high school days. It isn’t being a janitor, disciplinarian, or substitute. Within education and academia especially, there are some occupations that are more rewarding than others. The job of a teachers aide certainly brings a high level of satisfaction. Knowing that you help for the education and future career of a child is extremely rewarding. However, as you can expect the job has its standard responsibilities that you need to learn about before deciding to pursue such a career. You should definitely have an idea about what is feels like to be working as a teacher’s aide.
The main responsibility of a teacher aide is to help the teacher do their job. You will do all kinds of secretarial work from answering the telephone to printing copies. You might have to do data entry as well. In many cases the aides fill in report cards and have the teachers sign them. In order for you to perform this task you need to have basic, but good compute skills.
When working as a teacher’s aide you will be responsible for the supply of classroom materials. Some of these you will get directly from the school, but there are others that you will have to go and buy personally. You will have to account for the materials used by the teacher and purchased by you. This means you will be responsible for keeping records and receipts as well as for dealing with the school’s accountancy office.
As a teacher’s aide you will be actively involved in the preparation of the actual classes. It will be your responsibility to arrange any equipment necessary for the teaching process. In most cases, aides set DVD playing systems and TVs, but you might also have to organize the playing a slideshow that will be projected on a screen. Generally, you need to have good computer and technical skills to do your work.
If you work as an aide in a science lab, you will be responsible for the setting of the equipment for each student. You will have to organize the distribution of the experiment materials. This requires very good knowledge in the specific subject.
The present trends show that the job responsibilities of teacher’s aides are growing. In many cases the vacant positions are available exclusively to candidates who have the qualifications to tutor students. If you opt for such a position you will have a lot more things to do.
When you start working as a teacher’s aide you will be assigned a group of students that you will have to work with. They might be more advanced in the studies than their peers, but in most cases you will work with children that are lagging behind and have insufficient literacy and numeracy skills. Some aides are chosen for the job because they know a foreign language. These tutors work exclusively with children who cannot speak English or ones that have only basic understanding of the language.
Teacher aide work has its more interesting and fun sides as well. You will be responsible for the organization of any class trips and camps. You will go with the kids and supervise them. This means that you will enjoy the out of classroom experiences as well.
